In this course we will establish a foundation of visual communication using digital technologies. We will explore the idea of visual grammar and experiment with the visual design principles through readings and research. We will also work with the basic foundational skills of digital media including file management, scanning, printing, font management, digital illustration, photographic manipulation, video and page layout using Illustrator, Photoshop, AfterEffects and InDesign. We will look at the work of contemporary artists working in digital media and discuss the ways they address issues of sequencing, balance, text and movement. In our studio work, you will create digital projects that investigate issues of identity and self. Our ultimate goal will be to discover a language that draws on the ideas of visual grammar and makes visual a voice that is distinctive and original.
